Anne Cleasby – No Good Deed [Extract]

Today, for the second time within a week, I am on a Blog Tour but not a review, again!  I have another extract from the book on tour. I do hope you find it as intriguing as I did when I read it!

The fem pushed herself to her knees and then, painfully, to her feet. She was naked, her pale-beige skin covered in streaks of mud, wet hair clinging to her scalp and dripping down her back. Her pretty, elfin face was unmarked, save for a smear of dirt down one cheek. She scowled, limped over to Romero, and kicked him in the stomach with one bare foot. “How do you like it?” She kicked him again, this time connecting with his jaw. He grunted. She yelped, hopping on one foot. Romero dragged in a loud breath and tried, unsuccessfully, to get up. He grabbed at her ankle. “I’ll kill you for sure.” The fem staggered out of his reach, clutched at her ribs, and sat down heavily. “Piss off.”

Romero managed to pull himself into a sitting position. He hunched over, hugging his stomach. “You’re dead, you mangy, treacherous little whore.” Scarlet took her arm and hauled her upright. She was battered, her muddied body covered with grazes and the beginning of some impressive bruises, but she didn’t look as though she had any serious injuries. He walked her over to where Mink leaned against the building wall, flanked by the escorts, shook the water from his stiffened hair, extracted his dark glasses from his belt and put them on. Claws shook his head. “I told Romero she was trouble. Why would Elise sell her so cheaply, otherwise?” Scarlet shrugged, and brushed a smear of mud off his sleeve. “You should have let him kill her. She’s completely worthless now. Everyone knows what she’s like.” “What did she do?” “Killed one of Elise’s clients, or so they say.” Claws looked doubtful. “I doubt it, myself. I mean, look at the size of her. I don’t know what she did to rile Romero.”

Scarlet doubted it too. She wouldn’t be alive if she’d upset Elise. The old witch had a terrible reputation. He let go of the fem’s arm and she sagged against the wall. “Come on Mink.” “Take me with you.” Her small voice was pitiful. Huge blue eyes peered out from a mass of wet tangled hair. Scarlet glanced at Mink.  “You can’t save everyone,” he said. “You’re one to talk,” Scarlet muttered. “What about that mutant dog thing you brought home?” “Mutant cat. And she’s got a name.” “Whatever.” Scarlet waved a hand, dismissively.

Mink’s monster pet could have been anything.“I’ll work hard.” The fem shook her hair away from her face, sending drops of water everywhere. “Please?” “Ha,” Claws interjected. Scarlet hesitated. She was obviously no good as a pleasagurl, not if she had notions of escape through violence, but Koo-Suki could probably find her something in the organisation. Production maybe? He had a brief flashback to the fem they’d found dead and mutilated. He couldn’t leave this one to Romero’s mercy. “I’ll pay her meat value,” he said to Claws. “You said yourself she’s useless.”

Author Bio

Anne Cleasby lives in the English Lake District with her dog and two cats.
As a child Anne wanted to be a scientist, wear a white coat and explore outer space. She worked as a scientist for a very long time, but never got to fly a spaceship or even travel beyond the solar system. This was a huge disappointment given the reasons for her career choice, so eventually she made up stories instead. Probably just as well, as she is claustrophobic.
Anne writes dystopian fiction (Degrees of Freedom series) and science fiction under her own name, and urban fantasy/paranormal romance as Annalisa Carr.Follow her at:
