The second book in the Mélisende Thriller series. I was lucky enough to get on the first books blog tour as well and couldn’t wait for this book’s appearance. Well, what can I say? Mel is back! I sat down and began reading it just felt like I just slotted back into the team again! Let’s have a look at the synopsis.

She’s hunting arms smugglers. But who is hunting her?
One dead body, two badly injured operatives and five crates of hijacked rifles.
In Rome, former French special forces intelligence analyst Mélisende des Pittones is frustrated by obnoxious local cops and ruthless thugs. Despite the backing of the powerful European Investigation and Regulation Service, her case is going nowhere. Then an unknown woman tries to blow her head off.
As Mel and fellow investigator Jeff McCracken attempt to get a grip on the criminal network as well as on their own unpredictable relationship, all roads point to the place she dreads – the arid and remote African Sahel – where she was once betrayed and nearly died. Can Mel conquer her fear as she races to smash the network and save her colleague’s life?
Another action-packed instalment for Mel and the team as they are continuing to dig into the arms smuggling gang they tried to break in Double Identity. Rome finds her team in danger, Brussels it is Mel that finds herself in danger. She is followed to Strasbourg and the South of France. She arrives in London where herself and Jeff only just miss being attacked. Mel begins to feel that the enemy is one step in front of her.
Both books in this series are brilliantly plotted, fast moving stories. The characters are so well written, as I said I felt like I just slotted back into Mel’s team. Alison Morton’s background makes this a rich, intricately detailed series. This book is a worthy follow up to the first. I did love the race around Europe and again the author had me feeling I was there, even though I have never visited these countries! As Mel slowly comes to the realisation that everything comes back to the Sahel in Africa, we are given a strong sense of place there as well. The author is excellent at placing the reader where she wishes them to be.
The fact that I felt as bad as Mel does when she discovers everything led back to the Sahel is testament to the author’s skill in creating characters that you can relate to. I was on the edge of my seat as Mel began to uncover the truth and it was impossible to put this book down.

Alison Morton has, in my opinion, topped her first book in this series. This is one heck of a gripping read with enough twists to make you dizzy and characters that are all unique and complex.
A massive thank you to Alison Morton for asking me to join her tour for this book and for so generously gifting a copy of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
