A cup of coffee, placed on a table next to the old recliner, kept him awake. Karl desired something much stronger, but the effects of liquor on his elderly body would send him off to sleep. And Karl did not want that.

Even after his wife made the decision to retire to the bedroom, Karl stayed, alone, in his thoughts and nightmares that arrived every evening. So much sadness and regret were embedded in his mind, even as simple memories like last night’s dinner or the score of the ballgame, slipped through with ease.

Once the lights were dimmed and the sun began to set, shadows formed through blinds; stripped lines appearing on the floor and walls. Sometimes, when Karl left his jacket on the back of the kitchen chair, the stripes brought back awful images of forced enslavement with and by men long dead and buried. However, the lights alone, were not the entirety of his fear. It was where his eyes went when he was alone; the locked cellar door that sat alongside the kitchen. Boxes and crates, filled with memories of Christmas past, graduations, and family vacations, lined the walls of the basement; every nook and cranny taken up. But there was something so much darker, hidden deep within the basement that scared him.

Sometimes, it was as if eyes were looking back at him, peeking through the tiny keyhole that kept the cellar locked. Other times, the howls and cries of all those that kept his dreams alive could be heard through the wind that swept through the screened windows on a light spring evening.

Eventually, Karl would go to his bed. He would rather be frightened next to the woman he loved than closer to what truly scared him. And though he desired to keep things secret; nightmares carried until death; Karl could feel the pull.  He was destined to bear witness to his past, though everything in his being told him to avoid it. And soon enough, the great beast would return, and Hell would follow close behind.
