Jess Kitching – The Girl She was Before

A debut thriller from an author I don’t know is always an interesting read, mainly because I don’t know how good it will be or what to expect. All I can say is I am lucky to have been invited to this books tour as this is such a great thriller. Let’s have a quick look at what it’s about.

Jess Kitching

Nat lives a picture-perfect life, but it wasn’t always this way. A victim of horrific bullying when she was a teenager, Nat will do anything to keep distance between the girl she was before and the woman she is now.

But when her best friend is murdered and people begin to point their finger at her, Nat’s new life quickly begins to unravel.

To Nat, it’s no surprise that the crime happened at the same time as the return of her biggest tormentor, Chrissy Summers. A woman with a violent streak who destroyed lives when she was younger and isn’t afraid to do it again.

Face to face with the past she so firmly keeps behind her, Nat’s sanity wavers as her determination to reveal Chrissy as the monster she knows her as rises to dangerous heights.

The question is, can Nat prove Chrissy is a killer, or will Chrissy get to Nat and her family before she has the chance?

You can’t outrun the past…

The Girl She Was Before is an excellent debut. Jess Kitching has written this book so well that I can’t wait for her next book! The themes this book dealt with are sensitive and triggering to some, but they are dealt with very well and do make me wonder if the author has herself had experience of bullying as the emotions she evokes are perfect.

I found the characters very well created, they were very relatable and maybe not all likeable but I can tell you they managed to get in my head. A book that is very emotional due to the realism that Jess Kitching writes with in her descriptions of the acts that Nat, the main character suffered in the past. I found I was almost in tears at one part. It is a very immersive story one that I read in a day.

I loved the unexpected twist to the story too. It just added to the surprisingly addictive read. It is a gripping and tense thriller that does keep you guessing all the way. I am looking forward to seeing more from Jess Kitching in the future.

Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Kingsley Publishers for the copy of the book.
