Lorey Durston – Carrying Clover

‘Carrying Clover’ by Lorey Durston is one of those books that makes me rejoice that I blog. A book that I could easily have missed if not for taking part in blog tours and thus is a little gem.

Camille is starting again. She has a job with her foster sister, Lizzie and has bought herself a flat with money she inherited. She is so hopeful that this is her new start and everything will be great. Her flat isn’t ready so she books into a B&B for two days. While there she makes a friend of the owner, Lou and George another resident. George seems like the perfect man for her. Camille just thinks everything is falling into place for her.

The story gives us the two women’s back story and we see that although Camille thinks of Lizzie as a sister, Lizzie doesn’t feel the same way, as we see. She resents Camille for a lot of things in their past including Camille ‘stealing’ her boyfriend.

Told mainly from Camille’s point of view with the occasional chapter from George, who is among many things a liar. We are given insights into his thoughts, which aren’t what you would expect. He only sees Camille as an easily controlled woman and weak.

Lizzie is given her own chapters as well. This shows us what she is exactly and none of it is nice reading. Both Lizzie and George want to control Camille and you see how strong they feel in their bitterness and hateful thoughts about her.

A tense and suspenseful read that really does keep you guessing and wishing Camille wasn’t so easily manipulated by these two character’s that clearly mean her harm. She does question things but not nearly enough. The author has created a unique and intriguing story with an ending I didn’t see coming and characters I loved to hate!.

Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and  Lorey Durston for the gifted copy of the book.
