‘A Winter Baby For Gin Barrel Lane’ by Lesley Hutchinson is a historical fiction saga, set in Birmingham around the 1860s. It is the second book in a series but can be read as a standalone, as I found out when I realised I hadn’t read the first book. A heartwarming and emotional read for sure. It is the second book in a series but can be read as a standalone, as I found out as I hadn’t read the first book. I didn’t really have any issues keeping up with the story or people even.

Every single character in this book bring their unique voice to the story and I love that in a book. I loved the real strong sense of community that is very present in this book, as is the support people are willing to give within this community. Dolly decides to open another business which brings another set of troubles for them all. A certain businessman decides he isn’t happy with this state of affairs and this brings a serious note to the story as it unfolds.

A story that takes you right to the Victorian era in a few pages. It is a really immersive “book. The characters are large as life and so realistic with the authors vivid storytelling. I could have been there myself. The emotions I went through with this book! I felt everything the characters were going through.
I have read Lindsay’s work before and loved that too, she has a skill for transporting you to the period the book is set in. Her characterisations are always spot on and she always brings a great saga story.

This is another example of her skill as an author and being able to bring us a heartwarming story of love, family and friendship that the reader can feel a part of. If you love an emotional but heartwarming historical saga this may be a book for you.
Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources, Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the gifted copy of the book.
