Lynn McEwan – In Dark Water

‘In Dark Water’ by Lynn McEwan is a brand new series set in Dumfries. A police procedural series featuring DI Shona Oliver. DI Oliver isn’t your run of the mill copper, no, she is also a volunteer for the RNLI.

Lynn McEwan

Whilst out on her voluntary work with her crew they discover the body of a woman in the Solway Firth. This is a body of water that has one side on England and the other Scotland. Cumbrian police begin to investigate but they discover the woman may have had ties in Dumfries Shona takes the case. Shona finds a network of criminal activity that links to cover-ups and illegal acts right to the top as her boss wants her to drop the case. Shona won’t let go of the case and is determined to uncover the truth as her family life and career are teetering on the edge.

A book with a likeable main character who is at least tenacious and a thorough investigator in her job. The genius of making a volunteer gives us the picture she is a generous, bighearted woman too. Her home life is chaotic but that just highlights how she copes with differing situations. I enjoyed the fact that Shona’s team were well developed too, so you feel like you are with people you are really getting to know and it adds to the engagement with the story.
The pace was consistent and really started to build as the story unfolded. The mystery had me reading just one more chapter…as you do!

A highly entertaining and thorough tale. I do hope to see Shona again, she is a very interesting protagonist and I would like to revisit Dumfries as well!!!

Thanks to Love Books Tours and Lynn McEwan for my copy of the book.
