Matt Cost – Wolfe Trap

‘Wolfe Trap’ by Matt Cost is the first book in the Clay Wolfe/Port Essex series. It is a mystery series that is set in Port Essex, in Maine.

Matt Cost

We meet former Boston homicide detective Clay Wolfe. He has left the police to return to Port Essex to look after his grandad and open a private detective agency. He is very happy to just kick back and deal with lesser things after his stint in Boston. He doesn’t count on being asked to investigate who sold drugs that ultimately killed a 6-month-old baby and that he really does not realise that his town is not all it seems.

A small town such as this means usually everything has a connection and so starts the intrigue of this well-written book. It is a story that is a multi-threaded one and they slowly show themselves to give us the entire overview of exactly what has been happening in this town and then the plot almost explodes in your hands. Clay finds himself in the middle of a modern-day crisis involving drugs, as it so often is these days.

I enjoyed Matt Costs’ characterisation very much. Clay is a genuine kindhearted man who is always dressed so smartly. He has his issues but that just makes him more realistic. I was invested in Clay immediately and was as intrigued as him to get to the bottom of it all.

A great start to a new detective series that I think will be one of those series I need to read each and every book!

Thanks to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours or my copy of the book.
