Alison Knight – The Legacy

‘The Legacy’ by Alison Knight is the second book I have read by this author. I loved the other book I read and was so happy to be asked on this tour.

Alison Knight

We meet Charlotte and James who are our main characters. We see Charlotte struggling to make ends meet on the wages that she earns as a teacher. After having time off work with illness she is ready to return to work. Charlotte gets a call from a solicitor informing her that her recently deceased Godmother Jean Jarvis had changed her will before she died and left every penny she had to Charlotte. Jean’s only surviving relative James Jarvis is livid, as far as he was concerned the inheritance was his and his alone.

James is a weak man who is a spoilt brat who never bothered with his Aunt when she was alive, all he was, and still is, interested in was her money, he needs it to pay off his gambling debts before he gets his legs broken or worse. James, his horrible girlfriend Fliss and her unscrupulous solicitor brother Percy begin to tarnish Charlotte’s reputation and get the will overturned. These three truly underestimate Charlotte who has allies on her side and her own determination. James is realising that Fliss and Percy aren’t as straightforward as he thought. They are making his life even worse than he thought it could ever be. He finds he has to go on a trip out of the country and sees a golden opportunity to walk away and have a fresh start.

Will James’s idea work or will he just get himself into more trouble? Charlotte seems to be able to take a step back and relax now James has gone, or can she? Could there be anyone else around who sees the opportunity to attempt to fleece Charlotte?

A story of family, greed, secrets and plenty of lies which is set during the 1960s with two main characters, Charlotte and James who are the exact opposite in characters and their code of behaviour. Charlotte coming from a place of hard work and earn your own money and James being the man who fritters away money like water and a waster. He expects everything for nothing. That is one man I could not warm to.
Alison Knight has again created characters that are realistic and vivid in their personalities. As in life, there are people I liked and some I could not stand.

I found this a story that really held me, it was such a well-crafted drama that had some twists and surprises along the way and it has an ending I didn’t expect as well! All in all another gripping read from Alison Knight, I would definitely recommend her books to anyone.

Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Alison Knight for the copy of the book.
