‘The Bone Code’ by Kathy Reichs is the twentieth Temperance Brennan book in the series that the Bones tv series is based on. Kathy Reichs just knows how to bring a story. After so many books she still has the talent and skill to create what I consider one of the best books in the series.

Tempe is back again and her past is colliding with her present. After a storm in South Carolina washes a barrel ashore with skeletal remains of two young female victims inside, Tempe is eerily reminded of an old cold case from years ago that has eerily similar details involving two female victims, one being a child. Even stranger is the fact that those victims were in Montréal and seemingly have no connection to the new case. As she consults with her boyfriend, ex-Detective Andrew Ryan who worked the old case, they try to piece together any connection. Meanwhile, in Charleston, a flesh-eating bacterium breaks out causing thousands to panic and test themselves to check if they have the rare genetic mutation that will make them vulnerable. Could there be a connection?

Wow! Kathy Reichs has never wavered for me, every book brings something different. Her skills at creating a sense of place are something else. I always love returning to Tempe, I really, after all these books feel like I have been to Montréal. Her descriptive writing plunges me into Tempe’s world and I really don’t come up for air until I have finally finished. It was a really authentic and real story that felt even more real with mentions of Covid-19.
Tempe is definitely back and we see her travelling to and fro from Canada to the South at her usual fast forward work pace. I was so happy to be back with all the characters I know and love with the additions of some new ones also. If you have ever read a Temperance Brennan book you will definitely understand when I say Kathy Reichs has created all her characters to the last Nth. We have seen all the weaknesses and strengths that Tempe has over the years and of course, I do think the series on TV helps to visualise the characters too.

As always with Tempe the story is a twisty, tense and intriguing one. That’s why I find these books so hard to put down for too long. I am sad I finished it already but I am sure we will see Temperance Brennan again, and I cannot wait!
Thank you to Anne Cater of Random Things Tours for asking me on this incredible book tour and Simon & Schuster UK for my copy of the book. I had a blast!
