‘Dating The It Guy’ by Kirsten Lindsay Hager is a young adult fiction book that I found a thought-provoking story that I enjoyed.

We meet Emme, her ex cheated on her so she isn’t for trusting too easily or even dating. She is in High School and is attending some summer classes. A quiet shy girl, so imagine how she feels when the most popular boy in school starts sitting next to her! They begin to get to know each other and slowly they are drawn together. He is the son of a senator, who doesn’t want to date him? Brendan isn’t what she expected though, he is sweet and caring.
As they begin dating Emme is as happy as can be but, his ex is constantly trying to win him back and Brendan isn’t saying yes but he isn’t saying no either. Emme is confused and frustrated with the situation. This relationship is blocked by non-communication. They are too busy second-guessing each other, this doesn’t help in any way! Emme has a lot on her plate, she is out of her depth dating and her grandparents are getting frailer as time goes on and she is finding it hard to deal with. In desperation, she attempts to gain some control by living by her horoscope and using crystals. Will this help her or will it push her over the edge she is precariously teetering on?
We see Emme, for the sweet girl she is who is trying her best to take care of herself while caring deeply about people around her. She is a girl who helps as much as she can while struggling with her feelings about her grandparents. I found this quite bittersweet but true. I was the exact same about my grandparents and it is really hard. The author has written this from the heart and I can tell.

As I said, it is a thought-provoking story with layers, the first being the dealing with dating in high school and another being the daily struggle for Emme with her family and how she is using the horoscope and crystals instead of being clear with boundaries and communicating.
A sweet, emotional and interesting story that shows us that sometimes communication is very definitely key to moving forward.
