‘When Angels Fear’ by Polly J. Mordant is the first book in a series named The Flammark series. Polly J. Mordant is an author I have never read anything by, so I went in with the attraction of the cover and synopsis read to see what I thought.
We meet Emma, the main character of this story, she decides to leave an abusive relationship and starts her life again in Flammark, a slow and sleepy village. As Emma settles into her new home she begins to realise that things in this village are not as they seem. Emma begins to get to know people within the community and she starts to discover she has a connection that she was totally unaware of beforehand. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that Emma is the key to thwart a darkness threatening to overcome the village and as Emma enters the path of her destiny the question is will she fulfil it or will she fail?
I truly loved this story, filled with suspense and horror too. A supernatural thriller that ticks the boxes for me. The characters were all really well written and I cared especially about Emma, a survivor who grows in strength throughout the book and then we have the characters who are not as they seem and these add to the tension with this book.
Overall a brilliant start to a series that had me hooked from beginning to end and had me reading as much as I could to get to the bottom of everything.
