Catherine Cavendish – In Darkness Shadows Breathe

‘In Darkness Shadows Breathe’ by Catherine Cavendish and published by Flame Tree Press is definitely a story that makes me jumpy. My first Catherine Cavendish book and it won’t be the last!

Catherine Cavendish

Carol is housesitting for a couple in the first half of the book. She is very isolated, without friends or family and her past has been quite troubled as well. She begins to experience weird and scary events happening, they made me check over my shoulder too! As time goes on her health diminishes and she ends up in hospital where things got even worse.
Nessa is undergoing cancer treatment and needs to stay in hospital because she has had an operation bad enough that she can’t return to her home. While she is there weird and unusual things begin to happen.

This story made me so jumpy! Don’t get me wrong though, I loved it. The setting was so atmospheric and eerie, the fact that a new hospital had been built right on top of what was an asylum and workhouse hospital, made me get goosebumps when reading the descriptions Catherine Cavendish so eloquently wrote. I was picturing the old building that clearly, the scenes where set from the start.
Catherine Cavendish brought Carol and Nessa’s stories together really well and the ending, well, let’s say it ain’t what I thought it would be!

A story that creeps up and drags you in until you are almost as scared as the characters you are reading about. Magnificently, dark, eerie and all-consuming in it’s telling. A Gothic tale for a dark night, or not! Depends how easily scared you are really.

Thanks to Random Things Tours and Flame Tree Press for the copy of the book so I could join in this deliciously creepy and dark blog tour today.
