Anna Cookson – The Sound Of Your Soul

Anna Cookson

‘The Sound Of Your Soul’ by Anna Cookson is another fantastic debut novel, I have read a few lately and they all seem to be raising the bar for debut books.

This particular story is set in a dystopian future that sees climate change has changed everything from every part of life. Water is scarce, fish stocks have all gone, marriage is not legal and we see religion abolished as well.

This is the world in which every person is watched by the government with their ‘i eye’ phone. The President is only seen on TV, not in person.
Cally Dunne is an artist whose husband never returned from a government ‘Training Session’. A free spirit who is alone with her paintings of the fish she once knew, waiting for her husband to return. This is a mystery she needs to solve, has he been taken away or not? With the help of a group of rebels and a professor of Egyptology, she embarks on a journey through hidden tunnels, the mysteries of Ancient Egypt and even on to Africa! She is attempting to save her husbands soul to keep her own.

Well, this is a book that is frighteningly real in some ways, and a skillfully woven dystopian story. Anna has managed to bring us characters that can be believed in and the world-building is so well done I was sucked into Cally’s world and engrossed so much I really wanted to keep reading even when it was impossible. A well-researched story which showed more and more as the story developed, with intrigue keeping me on my toes as the mystery unravelled as we went.

An excellent debut that I thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end.

Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Anna Cookson, for the copy of my book for my review today.
