‘Inside Voices’ by Sarah Davis is a very unique book. It begins with a school drive-by shooting and ends in the harsh, wild country of Alaska. A captivating book that is an atmospheric read from beginning to end.

Penny saw the drive-by shooting and her father being killed by the same people, only, she saw it before it happened, she is a girl who experiences premonitions but wasn’t able to stop any of it. Suffering from PTSD she decides to join a college research project in Alaska, Her mother and sister move with her. This is the kind of life she needs doing simple things, until her premonitions begin to start again. The fact that there are several murders as well signals warning bells, but they are not clear enough for Penny to make a difference. She throws herself into her research, the village community and becomes closer to a special man. All this begins to aid her in moving closer to letting go of the tragic past and to begin healing. Will her premonitions help to lead to the killer? What is in Penny’s future, only time will tell.

As I said, a very unique premise and one that I threw myself into fully. It is no stretch of the imagination for me to read of psychic abilities so it made a refreshing change to read a story like this. The connection with the natural world was so vivid too, Alaska being a very natural place and also dangerous at times was portrayed beautifully. Sarah Davis has even managed to bring a little romance for Penny, which I thought was well deserved for her. Then there was the mystery of the killer and we had some twists which I didn’t predict.

Altogether a great almost cross-genre book that kept me reading till the end.
Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources and Sarah Davis for the copy of the book today
