Alexine Crawford – Charity’s Choice

‘Charity’s Choice’ by Alexine Crawford is a historical fiction novel set in the late 1640s.

In the years of the Civil War when people had begun to question their loyalty to the Crown and to established religion as well. Even though this book is fiction, we really can see how life would have been like back then as well as managing to take an in-depth look at the confusing political and religious situation.
This was a time when anything from meetings to publications of not allowed writing could lead to being imprisoned! Even gossip could lead to trouble and oh boy, there seemed to be plenty around.

We meet the Mannory family of Farnham, Surrey, they run tannery and leather business. Father, Jacob, the boss is in a fight with his son, James, over how the business should be run. Not an unusual problem in families with a business. Jacob’s other son, Thomas, is a totally different creature. He returns from his adventures, bringing Charity, a shy girl who is very caring and as we find out is an industrious hard worker. She can read and write, look after children, cook, sew and soon becomes part of the townsfolk. This town and people, along with their beliefs are all at the centre of Charity’s Choice.

Everyone has choices to make and Charity’s will definitely be life-changing, can she make it?
This period is one I know little of, so I learned quite a bit reading this, as well as enjoying the story within its pages also.

Thank you to Random Things Tours and Alexine Crawford for the book to be part of the blog tour today.
