‘Under The Camelthorn Tree’ by Kate Nicholls is a raw, honest and emotional memoir of how she took her five children from England to Botswana in the 1990s.

It deals with rape victims there in 1996, Kate and a team of people, educated the local communities about HIV/AIDS and attempted to spread the information about women and children being assaulted sexually.

The story flips back and forth and we learn about her time spent with lions and her more recent struggles of attempting to bond with her children again while dealing with alcoholism and PTSD from experiencing gang rape too. What a heart-rending story! Brutal almost in its telling, but so inspiring too! A life led that always helped others and has experienced so much personal pain. I felt greatly honoured to share this journey with Kate and her family. The story is so personal but the pain she suffers is a pain for everyone.

It makes me glad to think she has been able to voice these struggles and say it out loud, it is her right.
