Ruth Harrow – In My Wake

In My Wake by Ruth Harrow is a psychological thriller and it definitely kept me turning the pages.

Hannah and Will are married with a twelve-year-old daughter. They have to return to Hannahs childhood home because her older sister, April has taken her own life. When they get there she finds out that no one even realised April was having problems of any kind. Hannah feels guilt due to lack of communication between herself and April. Hannah had left the place she called home as soon as she was able and never returned, until now. When Hannah was just twelve and April, sixteen, April was dating Will, an eleven-year-old went missing on the same day as a significant event that changed Hannah forever. That day was the day both sisters have never spoken of since, not even realising the full truth of events that day.

Hannah begins to feel uneasy and almost paranoid as if she is being watched constantly, her mind going into overdrive. Receiving strange messages and everywhere she looks the village seems to be gossiping and curtain-twitching. The more Hannah thinks the more she realises she doesn’t know her husband really. April warned her a long time ago, but she took that as a rant through jealousy…now, she wonders exactly who she should be scared of!
The story does slip back to the past in various chapters and this serves to show us Will and Hannah and the history, I enjoyed this. I felt like the author was rounding off the characters for me, so I had the “whole” of them, fleshed out and open to interpretation.

A story that reflects back to us the secrets we also keep or those around us and the fact that we can know someone but not truly know them. Thanks to Ruth Harrow for the book so I can write this review on the blog tour today.
