Darryl A. Woods – The Summoned Ones

‘The Summoned Ones’ by Darryl A. Woods is a fantasy story that’s a debut book that would be enticing to both adults and teenagers.

The story revolves around eight friends, who are fulfilling a friends final wish by hiking through a National Forest. They find the right cave and enter it. Their caving ends up being a lot deeper than ever before and they end up in a dangerous situation. The biggest issue is they aren’t where they started from…Earth! They have ended up in somewhere called Malabrim and they are known as ‘The Summoned Ones’! Part of a prophecy that will turn the tide of a battle, then, to top it all, their friend, Josh, whose dying wish was for them to return his ashes to the cave they were in…is alive!

Well, what a story! The first chapter goes into great detail about the boys so we have a great grounding in who the characters are, this reads a little slowly but then, they arrive in Malabrim and the story flows. Darryl has done a great job of world-building, I was carried away with the boys into this strange world and what challenges and danger may be ahead. As the story develops we watch the boys have their endurance tested and we see them grow while learning about themselves and their new world, they meet strangers with strange names. Oh, mustn’t forget the magic! The magic in this world is so different from other fantasy books I have read, this one is connected to music! That is something you will learn more about when you read the book.

I always think fantasy books are not one of my favourite genres, then I pick one up and find myself in another world and absolutely love it, leaving real life behind makes for a better day, in my opinion.
