Marian L. Thorpe – Empire’s Reckoning

‘Empire’s Reckoning’ by Marian L. Thorpe is the first book in a new trilogy that is a fantasy story blended with a deep sense of history also. This is the very first time I have read this authors work and must say I was lost in my book for some time reading this.

This particular story is a continuation of a previous trilogy of which some characters reappear from there, but we also see more new characters. I am planning to read the first trilogy as I must admit I feel that I need to fill in the gaps etc that came up at times and to appreciate the story fully.

We are introduced to Sorley, a musician who is in the previous trilogy but takes centre stage as such this time. We are taken back to the end of the previous trilogy and find out what has been happening for him right up to fifteen years after. He has a massive decision to make as he has found out secrets and is battling with himself and his conscience whether he should reveal this information or if it could be betrayal by him to do so.

I was awed at the quality of the author’s world-building and development of her characters, it is, of course, all one, if you can create a believable and real enough world the characters fall into place. It is almost like a saga which sweeps over the years, one which enchants us and keeps us reading as long as we can so we can stay in that world and forget everything else.
