Ian Porter – A Plague On Both Your Houses

A Plague On Both Your Houses by Ian Porter is a historical fiction book set on the home front in both Britain and Germany during the First World War.

Ian Porter

I am a bit of a history lover, so when I read the blurb I was dying to get stuck in! It is highly unusual to find a good book, that doesn’t read like an educational text about the war in the detail Ian has managed, but this one has just the right balance! The fact that we read about both sides also is amazing! The research shines through the book as you become immersed in the first world war and all its happenings. I felt like I was almost living it due to Ian’s realistic storytelling.

In London, Ruby and Nash are carrying on as always. Nash doesn’t buy into the war and helps conscientious objectors whenever he can and Ruby is helping Sylvia Pankhurst run a nursery that seems to fulfil a number of other needs also.

The German Home Front concentrates on Berlin and a number of people there, a farmer, nurse, black marketeer, a soldier and a rich woman. Ian weaves the threads together to create a picture of a front on the verge of collapse.

If you like your historical fiction vivid and realistic this is a book for you! I was truly sorry to leave World War One behind after finishing this!
